Nurturing The Tree of Life

Nurturing The Tree of Life (NTTL)
HIV/AIDS Prevention Initiative At Historically Black Colleges and Universities

The Nurturing the Tree of Live Initiative utilizes college students (NTTL Peer Health Advocates) to facilitate a four-module intervention originally created by the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council in 1995 through funding from the Centers for Disease Control and in collaboration with the former Midlands HIV/AIDS Prevention Collaboration. The intervention curriculum is incorporated into freshman orientation and/or seminar programs. The Nurturing the Tree of Life Initiative includes collaboration with SCHAC to assess health risk behaviors among college students. The provision of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) testing on each college campus twice a year is part of the intervention. STI screenings include: HIV, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Hepatitis C and Syphilis. The HIV/AIDS prevention intervention consists of four modules which include:

• Knowledge: “What You Don’t Know CAN Hurt You!”
• Attitudes and Beliefs: “ It’s Not What You Know…It’s How You Feel”
• Relationships: “What Is Your Connection”
• Risk Reduction: “Taking Action: Let’s Make a Deal”
